Plant Reduces Summer Temperatures and Extends Roofing Warranty
Non Air Condition Facility Cooled and Roof Warranty Extended:
Management at an industrial manufacturing plant located in the mountains of North Carolina faced a problem that was twofold: employees were complaining of the heat and the plant was in dire need of a new roof. The 350 manufacturing employees suffered from and complained vociferously about the heat every summer but air conditioning this facility in conjunction with a new roof was cost prohibitive.
According to the facility engineer, "several months and a considerable amount of energy was spent trying to determine the optimum solution". Ultimately, corporate opted to combine both problems, solving both with one stroke.
In the fall of 1992, the new single ply EPDM roof was installed, followed immediately with a Sprinkool roof mist cooling system, designed, manufactured and installed by Sprinkool Systems Int’l., Inc. in Killen, AL - USA. The cost savings realized with the Sprinkool system in lieu of air conditioning equipment made the total cost of both projects reasonable. The summer of 1993 was the first full season with the Sprinkool system operating. Feedback from the employees was very encouraging. Those who had complained the most of the near intolerable heat during the previous summers were now the first to acknowledge a remarkable improvement.
To further verify and confirm that an improvement had been achieved, management monitored and recorded room temperatures through the summer. These temperatures were compared to previous summer temperatures recorded in the same areas and under similar outdoor conditions. The results ranged from a decrease in factory temperatures of between 9ºF and 15ºF depending on the time of day.
According to the facility engineer, "the key to the project turned out to be the roof cooling system". Since the Sprinkool system keeps the roof surface 60º - 70º cooler than it would be without the roof cooling system and reduces UV damage, the roof manufacturer extended the roofing warranty by an additional five years!
The Sprinkool system was so successful on the original 291,000 ft2, that when this facility was expanded in 1997, the roof cooling system was also expanded to cover the additional 40,000 ft2.
