The A/C Lite Solution
Sprinkool System in conjunction with Mechanical A/C:
A 100,000 ft² manufacturer of aluminum windows and doors in
middle Tennessee was experiencing summer temperatures on the plant floor exceeding 100ºF.
The labor market in this area was so intense and competitive that, because of the hot
working conditions, productivity and employee turnover was a major problem. Management
could not afford to cool the plant with conventional air conditioning alone. Instead, the
company chose to install an alternative: an A/C Lite system. This
system is a combination of mechanical air conditioning and a Sprinkool system. The
Sprinkool system provided most of the cooling by eliminating the roof as a source of heat
gain which reduced the overall cooling load of the building by over 100 tons. The
mechanical system was then sized to provide the remaining cooling requirements. In this
instance, the Sprinkool system cut the tonnage requirements by approximately 60% and cost
about 1/3 that of a comparable mechanical system. The operating cost of the Sprinkool
system is less than 10% that of a standard, mechanical air conditioning system.
"Prior to the installation of the system, if it was 100º outside, it was 100º
inside the plant", said the Vice President of Operations. "Our ventilation
system was pulling in fresh air, but it was hot air. We installed the system and even on
those hot days when the temperature outside was in the upper 90s, we maintained the
plant temperature at 78º or less."
The system has also produced a noticeable effect on summer tempers as well as summer
turnover, "reducing it by as much as 30%".
